Sevens, Elevens and God

Is God’s nature our good fortune? Is humanity lucky that God happens to be benevolent? Can we thank our lucky stars and fate itself that God is love and not hate? Does the universe play dice with God?

The scriptures tell us that God is love. What would it mean for God to be hate? Your view on that depends upon your view of the Bible, and whether you believe it is the Word of God – the door to truth – or a compilation of the writings of men, a multi-tomed Aesop’s fable.

The Word tells us that a house divided against itself cannot stand. If this is not fact but truth, a thing that stands outside of time, creation and being, then a God of hate cannot exist, for that God could not stand. Hate is a divider. I can’t remember ever hearing about people joined by hate. Regardless of your opinion on the efficacy of hate laws, the reason for their existence is the powerful dividing nature of hate. If God, who was, is and is to come, is to exist, then God must be undivided, or he would destroy himself. He must be love, in order that he be One.

But a very interesting problem now rears its head. If God must be, then there is a law. And if God must be, then that law is greater than God, for it dictates to him. But we know by truth that there is no one greater.

So, the law cannot be outside of God, as it reveals his being, but it also cannot be over him, as it would then be greater. So, we can then say of God:

Fill rules over form.

But that form is not outside of who he is. If God is unbounded, then this makes sense – no law or boundary can contain him, but those boundaries and laws can reveal him. Form reveals fill, Word manifests Name. Thus Christ, the Word of God, declares,

John 17:6 I have manifested, I have revealed your Name, to those whom you have given me.

Christ is the form of God, the Father is the fill. And so it is written of Jesus in Colossians:

He is the fullness of the Godhead, within form.

And of the Father it is written in Ephesians:

The fullness of the One who fills all things in every way.
